How does cooperative behavior evolve in marine fishes that forgo personal reproduction? The Buston Lab studies social evolution using clown anemonefish to test hypotheses about cooperation and reproductive restraint. The group investigates population connectivity by measuring probabilities of larval exchange between sites using neon gobies as a model system. Research combines long-term field studies with experimental manipulations, molecular genetics, and mathematical modeling to link behavior, demography, and genetics. Students investigate how larval behavior and connectivity determine spatial genetic structure across marine metapopulations.
