How do natural selection and chance shape the differences recorded in genomes? The group uses genomic data to study organismal function and evolution within and between species. Research examines variation in DNA sequences, gene families and gene expression, considering the respective roles of selection and genetic drift. The program also develops approaches for detecting introgression and distinguishing its effects from differences in selection among genomic regions. Combining sequence information with expression data helps investigate how regulatory variation originates and which evolutionary forces influence it.
