Jenny Hsieh’s laboratory investigates how neural stem cells and newly generated neurons influence brain function and disease. The group studies adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus using mouse models, circuit tools such as optogenetics and chemogenetics, and patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells. Its disease-in-a-dish work examines genetic changes associated with epilepsy and neurodegenerative disorders. Connecting cellular mechanisms with circuit behavior helps investigate why some neurons become abnormally excitable. The research aims to inform future neurological interventions through experimental models of acquired and genetic disease.
