The Surface Water Hydrology Group conducts in-situ data collection and field and laboratory experimentation to characterize hillslope and catchment hydrology. The group applies remote sensing and data assimilation to develop physically-based models for predicting seasonal to decadal water availability in semi-arid basins. Researchers use process-based modeling and analysis of hydrological similarity to improve mountain block recharge estimates and catchment classification in ungauged areas. The team works on improving the physical basis of operational flash flood forecasting through measurement, modeling, and synthesis methods.
