Can evolution help ecological communities keep pace with climate change? Urban integrates ecology, evolution, and genetics to study biodiversity and extinction risk. His field research includes ponds, lakes, and streams, with work extending from New England to Alaska’s North Slope. He also investigates how adaptation and interactions among species influence ecological outcomes. Research on climate driven risks connects observations of organisms and communities with efforts to estimate future biodiversity losses, asking both how nature can respond to environmental change and where that response may reach its limits.
