How does a brain turn sensory input into perception and action? Cris Niell studies vision and the activity of neurons and brain regions during perception and cognition. His group develops methods to investigate these processes and has expanded its work to the octopus visual system, exploring what different nervous systems reveal about vision. Research includes classifying components of this system and developing microscope tools for active brain imaging. The work connects systems neuroscience with questions about brain development, visual processing, and neural diversity.
