How can smart materials and structures be designed and integrated to improve vehicle systems and add manufacturing capabilities? The Smart Materials and Structures Lab conducts experimental and theoretical studies in smart materials, system dynamics, ultrasonic additive manufacturing, and hybrid smart structure applications to develop component- and system-level solutions. Projects focus on integrating smart materials into transportation applications through NSF IUCRC Smart Vehicle Concepts Center collaborations and on ultrasonic additive manufacturing process development. The lab combines experiments, theory, and translational center activities to train PhD-level researchers and advance smart-structure incorporation in vehicles.
