Water purification can depend on the architecture of a material at very small scales. Hsiao studies polymers and nanostructured materials, investigating how preparation and processing influence their structure. His group develops nanofibrous membranes for removing pathogens and contaminants from water, including approaches that use gravity or solar heat. Broader research considers fibers, films, and bulk soft materials, with applications in water and energy. These projects connect polymer structure and manufacturing with efforts to develop accessible, sustainable methods for supplying cleaner water.
