How does an experience become a lasting memory? Ted Abel investigates the molecular machinery of memory formation and the biological mechanisms of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. His group uses molecular genetic approaches to connect neural circuits with behavior, including how sleep deprivation alters neuronal function. Another focus is epigenetic control of gene regulation during memory storage. These projects connect changes inside cells to changes in cognition, offering a research setting for interests spanning genetics, neuroscience, sleep, and the biology of learning.
