How can precise nucleases and nanoparticles be combined to correct disease-causing genes in patient cells? The Laboratory of Biomolecular Engineering & Nanomedicine develops gene correction techniques using CRISPR/Cas9 systems, TALENs and ZFNs to achieve precise and controlled genome editing. The group engineers superparamagnetic nanoparticle probes, quantum dot bioconjugates, activatable molecular probes and molecular beacons for sensitive multimodality molecular imaging and molecular detection. Researchers design and validate nanoprobe and nanodevice platforms, perform bioconjugation and cellular delivery, and optimize sensitivity and signal-to-background for cellular and in vivo imaging. Ongoing projects include targeted drug/gene delivery and gene targeting approaches for single-gene disorders and cancer.
