Can differences in predators and environments help predict how populations evolve and when new species emerge? The lab compares multiple populations and species across different environments to investigate the forces that generate biological diversity. Researchers combine those comparisons with experiments examining relationships between observable traits, organismal performance and evolutionary fitness. Much of the work studies how predators and other selective pressures shape diversification in small livebearing fishes of the genus Gambusia. The research spans ecological speciation, human-induced evolution, locomotion and predation, connecting environmental differences with changes in organisms and populations.

How does the arrangement of atoms determine how materials respond to electricity and convert mechanical motion into electrical energy? The group studies piezoelectric materials with X-ray diffraction, connecting changes in crystal structure to their behavior under electric fields. Researchers investigate how moving domain walls, defects and grain size influence the properties used in ultrasound and energy-harvesting devices. Neutron, X-ray and electron scattering help reveal atomic structures in lead-free alternatives to conventional piezoelectric compounds. The work also develops statistical approaches to crystallographic analysis and examines materials for energy storage and nutrient recovery from water.

Why do collections of grains and soft materials deform, develop patterns or fail when their surroundings change? The lab conducts experiments on granular materials, fluids, gels and disordered metamaterials to investigate behavior away from equilibrium. Researchers connect these experimental systems with theoretical approaches to examine the mechanisms controlling transitions between different material behaviors. Experiments explore how failure occurs and how unexpected patterns emerge in materials whose collective behavior depends on many interacting parts. Some studies use simplified experimental systems to examine biological and geological phenomena, while others draw questions from industry and climate change.

How does the gut immune system distinguish helpful microbes from pathogens and build resistance to infection? The group investigates cellular and molecular aspects of immune responses, including how animals recognize, respond to and eliminate infectious organisms. One research direction examines innate immune responses involved in astrovirus-associated intestinal disease and its resolution in turkey poults and humans. Another studies how inherited variation in innate immune genes changes susceptibility or resistance to infection. The lab also examines relationships between intestinal microbes, gut physiology and mucosal immunity to understand their contribution to animal health.

How can manufacturing methods produce biological materials with the structure and functional properties needed for medicine and sustainable food? The group combines computational modeling, experiments and data analysis to design processes for making products with biomimetic attributes. Its tissue-manufacturing research develops ultrasound-assisted bioprinting and three-dimensional melt and solution blowing for engineered medical products. Researchers also investigate non-destructive quality measurements using dielectric and ultrasound spectroscopy to assess these biological products. The work connects manufacturing settings, biomaterials and functional quality, while the broader research program includes sustainable protein applications.
