How can analytics explain and predict human behavior in sociotechnical systems using large-scale text and multimodal data? The lab develops human-centered analytics and machine learning methods for modeling behavior in health and online communities using deep learning, psychometric NLP, and multimodal feature fusion. Researchers build and evaluate large-scale digital experimentation platforms and design robustness methods to detect distribution shifts and adversarial conditions through predictive modeling and evaluation. The group applies high-dimensional deep document and hierarchical models to extract personality, psychometrics, and adverse-event signals from textual and search data for health monitoring. The lab integrates interdisciplinary computational, statistical, and experimental methods to frame, evaluate, and solve applied problems in trustworthy AI.
Ani Aprahamian Research Group
University of Notre DameAni Aprahamian · The Frank M. Freimann Professor of Physics and Astronomy
How do changes in nuclear structure alter element production in stellar explosions and neutron-capture processes? The group investigates the evolution of nuclear structure and its effects on nuclear masses, shapes, and decay lifetimes to understand heavy element nucleosynthesis. Researchers carry out experiments at the Nuclear Science Laboratory at Notre Dame and at international accelerator facilities to measure masses, decay lifetimes, and reaction rates. The team studies how nuclear reactions and weak interactions set time-scales and energy release in stellar environments to connect nuclear properties with astrophysical observables. Experiments combine measurements of decay lifetimes, masses, and reaction cross sections to constrain models of rapid neutron-capture (r-process) nucleosynthesis.
Elizabeth A. Archie Research Group
University of Notre DameElizabeth A. Archie · Nieuwland Collegiate Professor; Associate Chair
How do social relationships and organization influence the spread of parasites and microbes among social mammals in the wild? The Archie lab tests how social organization and behavior affect parasite and microbe transmission within and between social groups using long-term population-based field studies. Researchers analyze links between social relationships and individual health, immune function, disease risk, and survival through behavioral observation, immunology assays, and noninvasive genetic sampling. The group works primarily with wild baboons in the Amboseli Ecosystem, Kenya to combine behavioral and microbiome datasets. Projects integrate behavioral data, parasitology, and genomic microbiome analyses to identify mechanisms linking sociality to health outcomes.

University of Notre DameKrupali Uplekar Krusche · Associate Professor of Architecture
How can high-definition digital documentation preserve and reveal architectural form and construction details at complex heritage sites? The DHARMA lab uses high-definition surveying lasers and GigaPan photography to create precise 3-D documentation of monuments and urban settings. Researchers combine laser scans with hand measurements and photogrammetry to produce blueprints and detect subtle structural deterioration for conservation and repair. The team compared laser-derived measurements with historical reconstructions to reassess original temple column spacing, using frieze text spacing and foundational alignment as corroborating evidence. Students and faculty develop deliverables—exhibits, apps, books, and 3-D portals—based on rigorous optical surveying and analysis.

How should organizations design practices and governance to manage generative AI and its ethical challenges in workplaces? The GAMA Lab studies organizational and ethical implications of generative AI, combining empirical studies and design-oriented analyses. Researchers investigate norm-based coordination, guardrails, and managerial design to improve predictability and accountability in human-AI ecologies. The lab develops test-driven and governance-oriented methods for machine learning ethics, and studies how crowd and bot dynamics reshape online community behavior and data validity. Projects integrate computational modeling, field studies, and interdisciplinary theory to inform managerial responses to AI deployment.
